The ASEP Project brings communities, schools and law enforcement together within a procedurally just way to address reasons underlying absences from school.
The ASEP Project aims to reduce school absences of young people who are not attending school through an evidence-based restorative conference framework.
In the facilitated ASEP Conference, the student, their parents/carers, and school and police representatives discuss the causes and consequences of missing school, using procedurally just dialogue in a procedurally fair way.
All conference participants contribute to a plan of action to increase the student’s school attendance.
The immediate outcomes for schools and students who participate in the ASEP Project will be:
- increased school attendance,
- increased knowledge of school attendance laws for students and parents, and
- better relationships and more meaningful connections between students, parents, schools and police.
